Update

I lied. I'm not comfortably numb. I'm in pain and lots of it. I'm off to see an orthopedic doc today who will hopefully have something to offer me so I can go back to work, driving, and everything else. DH has been a star, taking care of pretty much everything that needs to be done in recent days.

One piece of good news from the past week, though.

Forum, the national (print) newsletter of Mothers and More published my essay, Working Vacation.

Off to the doc....

Comfortably Numb

I'm laid up with a painful case of sciatica, a pinched nerve. It feels as though someone is poking a hot metal rod down the core of my right leg. Off to take some painkillers....

My file cabinet, my life

Originally posted in my back-to-work blog at Austinmama.com.

Last weekend I shredded hundreds of documents from my largely defunct consulting business. These papers were a testimony to my professional life before (and a year or two after) becoming a mother. Perhaps I should have tucked some of them into a scrapbook as I do with my writing clips My first client, my first Fortune 500 client, my first government contract--all distant memories.

I shredded checks and receipts.
Tossed program evaluations and outlines.

All to make room for my boys' spelling tests and math quizzes.
Thanksgiving folders and Valentine's Day poems.
Report cards and soccer rosters.

And a few plump folders filled with my half-written essays.

We're Having a Heat Wave?

No, it's a snowstorm. Splinter and I just returned from shovelling our front walk. Boy, is he strong and helpful!!!!! He's warming up with a mug of hot cocoa and marshmallows while I'm snuggling up to my keyboard.

Splinter would like me to add that he tipped over a wagon full of snow, cleared it out and found huge ice stuff at the bottom of the wagon.

Fun in a Bun

Last Saturday I envisioned a lazy afternoon, hanging out with DH and the boys in our cozy home, enjoying some hot cocoa and a fresh batch of library books, but as the day wore on it was apparent that we had two energetic boys with a strong case of cabin fever.

So we grabbed our jackets and mittens and headed downtown to recently-renovated Chicago History Museum. We got there about an hour before closing, but the boys never seen to tolerate much more than that, anyway.

We give the museum a thumbs-up, four of them actually! It has a fun new kids area in which even vegetarians can experience a Chicago red hot with all the fixin's.

Speaking of hots it's reported that the mercury is headed up tomorrow! We're expecting temperatures of 13 degrees (in comparison to today's 10 below). It's enough to make us forget about that big football game the other day.
